Nurin Yusof’s interest lies in the diaspora of the self and the ownership we have over our being, both on a physical and psychological level. As a Muslim, Malay female from Malaysia, who is temporarily living in the United Kingdom, she beginsto question the permanence and signi cance of her positionin society. Portraying life as a liminal experience, her work ex- plores truth and believability through the use of language and narration as multifaceted forms of storytelling that establishes a sense of intimacy between the viewer, the work and herself. The idea of the self is also used to create a spectacle where ‘Nurin’ becomes the subject, object and/or performer, making her identity a commodity that is blurred, but extended to have a performative essence. Interactivity between her work and the audience is also crucial as she intends for the viewer to phys- ically complete the work, making it a unique experience for themselves.

I—Nurin, the hosting physical body of all Nurins, is concerned with creating and giving space for my developing Nurins who are myself and everything in between. I aim to objectify and commodify the understanding of ‘Nurin’, creating a sense of self with a shelf life that is rebranded accordingly and occurring through thematic explorations revolving around the negotiation of ones physical existence and identity ownership. This concern involving authority over the self and the movement of such power has been influenced by ideas of self exclusion and acceptance by the self or within a community in both the ‘real’ world and Nurin Nurin World, but especially in the limbo-like void where these two worlds intersect and resist each other.
Text and narration is often used to distinguish different Nurins through the employment of truth and believability of the personal self and the acceptance and/or interjection from the public audience. This creates space for intervention within Nurins through various narratives and hierarchies allowing for this idea of Nurin to freely exist within specific confinements influenced by the audience’s perception of me and the presented truth.
